Defensible Space Clearing
Firefighter-owned. We create the buffer zone that gives your home its best chance in a wildfire — built on real fire-behavior experience, not guesswork.
Defensible space is the carefully managed area of reduced vegetation around a home or structure that slows the spread of wildfire and gives firefighters room to defend the property. In Southwest Riverside County — where dry Santa Ana winds, steep terrain, and heavy brush make wildfire a year-round reality — a properly cleared defensible space is one of the single most effective steps a homeowner can take to protect a house.
Scroggins Equipment Inc is a firefighter owned and operated company, and defensible space is the service we know best. We do not just cut brush — we clear to the standards firefighters actually look for when they size up a structure during a wildfire. That means removing dead and dying vegetation, breaking up continuous fuel beds, eliminating ladder fuels that carry fire from the ground into the trees, and creating the spacing that lets an approaching fire drop out of the canopy and burn low and slow before it reaches your walls.
We serve homeowners and property owners across Murrieta, Temecula, Wildomar, Menifee, Lake Elsinore, Canyon Lake, French Valley, Winchester, Hemet, and Perris. Our equipment — including a 2026 Kubota SVL 75-3 track loader — lets us work steep hillsides, tight lots, and rough terrain that hand crews and larger machines cannot easily reach. Whether you are bringing an older property up to current fire-code standards, preparing a newly purchased home for its first fire season, or maintaining an existing buffer zone, we get the clearing done right the first time.
California defensible space law (Public Resources Code 4291) generally requires 100 feet of defensible space around structures in fire-prone areas, organized into zones with different clearance requirements. We work within these zones and can help you understand what each one needs for your specific property and terrain. The result is a home that is easier to defend, easier to insure, and far more likely to survive when the next wildfire comes through.
The Defensible Space Zones
Zone 0 — 0 to 5 feet
The immediate zone around your home. We remove dead leaves, dry grass, and combustible mulch, and clear anything touching the structure. This is where embers land first.
Zone 1 — 5 to 30 feet
The lean, clean, and green zone. We thin brush, remove ladder fuels, and space out remaining plants so fire cannot climb from the ground into tree canopies.
Zone 2 — 30 to 100 feet
The reduced-fuel zone. We cut back heavy vegetation, remove dead growth, and create spacing so a wildfire slows down and drops to the ground before it reaches your home.
